What is chenille embroidery?
Chenille embroidery is a decorative textile technique in which raised loops create a soft, full surface. Its appearance resembles a compact towel or teddy texture. Chenille is strongly associated with American varsity lettering and college jackets, but it is equally relevant to modern streetwear, merchandise, sweatshirts, hoodies, bags and standalone patches.
The chenille area supplies volume and tactile appeal. To create a precise boundary, it is often combined with chain stitch, satin stitch, flat embroidery or an appliqué edge. This keeps letters and bold logos readable while preserving the soft pile in the centre.
A convincing result depends on the relationship between artwork, dimensions and base material. Chenille is less suitable for extremely small lettering or very thin lines. AJDN therefore assesses which parts can be made in chenille and where a firm embroidered outline, simplification or larger format is required.

How we produce chenille embroidery
Direct or as an application.
Chenille on garments and as a separate patch
Chenille can be embroidered directly onto a suitable garment. This creates an integrated finish and is popular on varsity jackets, stable hoodies and sweatshirts. The product must be sufficiently stable and capable of being hooped correctly. Heavy seams, pockets, zips and stretchy zones may restrict the possible placement.
A separate chenille patch offers additional flexibility. It can be attached to different garments or accessories and makes stock planning easier. Depending on the artwork and application, we recommend an embroidered border, appliqué edge or another clean finishing method.
With 3D puff, height comes from foam beneath dense satin stitches; chenille gets its volume from the soft loop pile. For fine logos without a soft surface, conventional garment embroidery is usually more suitable. We select the technique according to the intended look and use.
Texture, material and production explained first
Clear lettering and enough space between shapes help with production. Large areas are particularly suitable.
Wash the garment inside out and avoid tumble drying where the finish requires it. Planning follows in the proposal after confirmation.
Varsity, college and bold lettering
Suitable for sports clubs, motorcycle clubs, initials, large letters, emblems and patches. Small designs and very small details are less suitable.
Direct embroidery and patches
Chenille can be produced directly on a garment or as a separate patch. AJDN overlocks the edges of Chenille patches.
