There is no universally best printing method for sportswear. The right choice is determined by the fabric, coating, stretch, design, position, washing and quantities. AJDN compares DTF, DTG, DTM and embroidery on the actual item.
Why sports textiles call for extra technical checks
Polyester and functional blends can react to heat, pressure and adhesive. With coloured polyester, dye can migrate into the decoration under heat; this is not limited to dark colours and also depends on the decoration system chosen. In addition, stretch can put extra strain on a decoration. Seams, ventilation panels and reflective parts also limit the positions available. That is why we assess the garment before a method or lead time is confirmed.
DTF for full-colour sports logos
DTF is versatile for sponsor logos, club badges and illustrations. It works across different quantities and allows variation between designs. A large solid area remains noticeable to the touch; with intensive movement, a smaller or more cleverly built-up design can be more comfortable.
DTG for suitable cotton
DTG is mainly interesting for detailed full-colour prints on technically suitable cotton items. For many typical polyester sports shirts, it is not automatically the first choice. AJDN looks at the actual textile and the desired result.
DTM for names, numbers and effects
DTM uses cutting-plotter material such as rubber, glitter foil or metallic foil and is suitable for names, shirt numbers, roles and special effects. The foil is chosen for stretch, colour, base and washing. For DTM, we recommend washing at 40 °C, no tumble drying and no ironing directly over the logo. Preferably wash the garment inside out. Also follow the garment's care label; a stricter instruction still takes precedence.
Embroidery for stable sportswear and teamwear
Embroidery suits polo shirts, sweaters, jackets, bags, caps and other sufficiently stable items. On very thin or elastic textiles, the weight or the stabiliser may be less suitable. AJDN checks letter height, line thickness, stitches and material in advance.
Choosing per application
- Full-colour sponsor logo: often DTF, after a material test.
- Names and numbers: often DTM, matched to stretch and washing.
- Cotton lifestyle sports collection: DTG or DTF, depending on the design and hand feel.
- Polo shirts, jackets and caps: embroidery when the item is sufficiently stable.
- On demand via your online store: choose an item and technique that are reproducible for every single order.
Have the item and design assessed together
